Returning for al night of live jazz featuring Seaside's R.J. Marx. R.J. is a leading tenor saxophone stylist, specializing in swing, hard bop and modern jazz.
After classical and jazz studies, he attended Berklee College of Music in Boston in the mid-1970s. While pursuing a career in journalism, he maintained a lifelong interest in jazz.A founding member of the Katonah Studio Jazz Band, R.J. appeared regularly at prestige venues throughout the metro New York region.
Moving to the Oregon Coast in 2015, he teamed with guitarist John Orr, drummer Dave Gager and bassist Joe Church to record and produce "The R.J. Marx Quartet," a collection of hard-driving and contemporary jazz tunes.
As a duo, R.J. and Orr appeared in February with jazz great Tom Grant and singer Shelly Rudolph in concert. An encore performance is scheduled at the Astoria Country Club in June.
R.J. weaves a musical history reflecting his influences from swing, bebop and modern jazz, inspired by Coleman Hawkins, Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollins and the greats of American music.
